How to Care for a Child with Autism

Childhood is often filled with fun, games, and learning. For a child to grow healthily, studying and learning new things play a crucial role. However, while many children can easily learn and accomplish tasks through their learning processes, some children, especially those with special needs, may struggle. Among various genetic disorders, autism is a significant one, as listed by the American Psychological Association along with Asperger's Syndrome, Down Syndrome, and more.

Special education for autism : Today, with proper training and special education, children with genetic disorders, including autism, can become somewhat self-reliant. When asked about the education of children with autism, psychologist and special educator Susmita Dutta explained that autistic children face challenges in communication, social interaction, and restrictive repetitive behavior. Various tests are conducted to determine the level of autism in a child, and based on the needs, appropriate training is provided. For example, autistic children may not easily recognize colors or have difficulty eating on their own. With special training, these skills can be taught. Many autistic children are either hyperactive or have an IQ level lower than average. However, with proper training, they can significantly improve.

Autism symptoms in children : When asked what parents should do for their autistic children, Susmita emphasized that parents should not feel inferior. As soon as autism is diagnosed, special education should be started. Teaching self-care and maintaining privacy is crucial for autistic children. They should be taught where to change clothes, how to behave in public, and the concepts of good touch and bad touch. However, these lessons should be imparted playfully. For children with moderate autism, special education is highly necessary.

Parents should always maintain patience with an autistic child at home. Due to behavioral problems and psychotic features, many parents suffer emotionally. In such cases, parental counseling can be beneficial. The mental health of parents is crucial for the child's well-being. Since autism is a 'brain disorder,' it is not entirely curable. According to Dr. Susmita, autism is unique. Autistic children are also sensitive and high-functioning. Though they may not become doctors or engineers, they can excel as athletes or singers. Regarding the marital life of autistic children, if the autism is very mild, marriage can be considered, but always with prior consultation with a specialist.

By following these guidelines and seeking appropriate support, parents can help their autistic children lead better lives.
