Hiralal Chaudhuri : Bengalis Still Enjoy Affordable Fish!

The Fish Revolution: Hiralal Chaudhuri

Bengalis have always loved their fish, but where do they get it from now? Urbanization has taken over rivers, ponds, and lakes. Yet, fish like rohu and catla still find their way to our plates. Who do we thank for this? Hiralal Chaudhuri, the pioneer of induced breeding.

The Birth of Induced Breeding

Induced breeding involves stimulating fish to produce eggs through injections. This method revolutionized fish production. During the monsoon, you might see people collecting pituitary glands from large fish at markets. These glands are used to create an injection that stimulates the fish to breed.

Hiralal Chaudhuri's Impact

Hiralal Chaudhuri worked extensively in the Naihati-Barrackpore region and held significant positions worldwide. On July 10, 1957, he successfully induced breeding in carp, marking a groundbreaking discovery in animal science. This method ensured that the high demand for fish could be met through artificial means.

National Fish Farmers Day

In honor of Hiralal's achievement, July 10 is celebrated as National Fish Farmers Day. His work allowed for the mass production of fish, keeping prices around 200-250 rupees per kilo.

The Legacy

Thanks to Hiralal Chaudhuri, Bengalis continue to enjoy fish at affordable prices. His method of induced breeding has had a lasting impact, ensuring that our love for fish remains sustainable.
