Heliport in West Bengal First Heliport in the State: Tourists to Enjoy Helicopter Services

The state government has taken another step towards progress by planning to build heliports in the region. Heliports will be constructed in three locations: Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Raiganj. This initiative aims to significantly reduce travel time, allowing passengers to reach Darjeeling and Kalimpong from Siliguri in just 10-15 minutes.

What is a Heliport? List Of Heliports in West Bengal

While regular air travel is common, heliport and helicopter travel are new concepts for many in the state. A heliport is a specialized airport for helicopters, providing facilities for takeoff and landing. It allows passengers to travel quickly from one place to another via helicopter.

Each heliport will include a helipad and a small terminal building or waiting lounge, where passengers can wait before their flight. The terminal will be much smaller than regular airport terminals. The state government has also emphasized security, ensuring that passenger luggage is scanned via X-ray machines. Additionally, fire services will be available for emergencies.

Who is Responsible for Building the Heliports?

The Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) has been tasked with the construction of these heliports. The central government’s Pawan Hans Ltd. has been awarded the contract to build the three heliports. Land has already been acquired in Darjeeling and Raiganj for this purpose, with 2 acres allocated for the Darjeeling heliport. The search for suitable land in Kalimpong is still ongoing.

Funding and Support

The heliport initiative is part of the central government’s Gati Shakti project, which aims to develop small airports and heliports across the country. This project is designed to enhance connectivity and support tourism. Construction has already begun under this scheme.

Benefits for Tourists

Tourists often prefer to visit hill stations like Darjeeling and Kalimpong. With the new heliport system, they can now reach these destinations in just 15 minutes by helicopter. Although the fare for helicopter rides has not yet been determined, it is expected to be affordable for the middle class due to subsidies from the central and state governments under the RCS.

Conclusion

The construction of heliports in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Raiganj marks a significant advancement in the state’s infrastructure. This new travel option will not only boost tourism but also provide a faster and more convenient way for people to reach their favorite hill destinations.
